David Lewiston passed away in Hawaii on May 29, 2017, at the age of 88, after an extended illness. The inveterate t was among the first to release recordings as part of the Nonesuch Explorer Series, which presented indigenous music from around the world, in the late 1960s. His first recording in the series, Music from the Morning of the World, featuring field recordings from Bali, was inducted into the National Recording Registry of "culturally significant" sound recordings in 2008. Here, the musician, producer, and writer Brian Cullman offers a remembrance. The thrilling sound of the Balinese orchestral style known as gamelan gong kebyar-which begins this record-is justly famous, for in no other music does one find such shimmering brilliance and tempestuous rhythms.

His first recordings were made in Bali in 1966, and the initial album from these recordings, Music from the Morning of the World, was released in 1967. He has made extensive recordings of Tibetan Buddhist rituals, most notably of the chordal chanting of Gyuto Tantric University (one of the great colleges of the Gelugpa, the Established Church of Tibetan Buddhism), and the Drukpa Kagyu rituals of Khampagar Gompa, as well as music from many other countries, including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Guatemala and Mexico, India, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh. I bought this album because I was looking for a good e of the "Ketjak," the chant for the monkey horde from the Ramayana. I had heard it a few times before, notably in Fellini's SATYRICON, where it was used as the soundtrack for a fight scene. I've heard slicker versions - the Musical Heritage Society had one called THE CELEBRATED GAMALANS that I really liked, but this one has a special energy. All of this music is authentic folk, performed by ordinary people carrying on a long tradition. All voices and bells and other musical instruments are crystal clear and at the appropiate recording levels. The tonality of the vocal music can to tinny and high pitched at times, hard to the sensative ear, and the majority of bells that are used are high pitched as well. A tough hear if one is used to the deep resonous tones.

David Sidney George Lewiston (11 May 1929 – 29 May 2017) was a London-born collector of the world's traditional music. He is best known for his recordings initially released on LP on the Explorer Series of Nonesuch Records beginning in 1967. He earned a graduate degree in 1953 from Trinity College of Music in London, where he studied piano, conducting, orchestration, harmony, and counterpoint.
