A Man Alive is the fourth studio album by alternative folk band Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, released on the Ribbon Music label in March 2016. The subject matter of the album was inspired by Thao Nguyen's relationship with her estranged father, who "left when I was maybe 11 or 12, my parents split up. And so he kinda just floated away but you never knew when he would come back and you never knew when he would just leave.

Now Thao and the Get Down Stay Down has partnered with Merrill Garbus, the sonically adventurous mastermind behind tUnE-yArDs, who previously co-produced the Thao & Mirah duo album. Recorded at John Vanderslice's San Francisco studio Tiny Telephone, A Man Alive works as a perfect match: Garbus' uncanny knack for fractured textures and exciting genre blends perfectly suits Thao's raw vocal yowl, yielding a crackling combination. An album mostly about abandonment ("We are not born for departure, but we do learn to take it"), specifically inspired by Nguyen's relationship with her father, underlying indignation creeps through the vocals even when singing about forgiveness, and is always present in the production. Rumbling bass and gritty drum and guitar tones continue on "Slash/Burn," which also offers colorful, trilled accents woven through looped background vocals.

She's soft spoken, but never lacking eloquence even through areas of patchy cell service and an always-altered schedule.
