Druggy Eerie Theatrical Complex Passionate Fiery Freewheeling Paranoid Trippy. Imagination Late Night. Death May Be Your Santa Claus. Among the many obscure British prog rock albums of the early '70s, Second Hand's Death May Be Your Santa Claus has to be one of the strangest, though not necessarily one of the best. While it's the kind of record likely to fire up genre enthusiasts, it's equally likely to inspire scorn from more general rock listeners unlikely to take a shine to its over the top frivolous absurdity.

  • Important note: There are two pressings of this disc. Both look identical, same matrix, same golden tinged disc. The key difference is that the first pressing is prone to bronzing, with copies decaying and turning brown and sticky on the label side by the end of the 1990s. The second pressing is manufactured correctly and doesn't decay.

  • Thanks to devrobot, I've now heard the French LP. Yes, it's time for a total geek out, Discogs style, because this needed to be done. Someone just had to scrutinize this masterpiece of an album. And apparently I was that "someone". This is the thing I'll be remembered for. I want the following text written on my gravestone:”DEATH MAY BE YOUR SANTA CLAUS”– Lead vocals have stereo reverb on French LP. Lead vocals dry on UK LP. – Piano is more prominent on UK LP. – Mellotron panned right on French LP, centered on UK LP. – Harmonica panned left on French LP, centered on UK LP. – High register organ panned right on French LP, panned left on UK LP (”Understand, love if you can…”). – Mellotron brass panned hard right on French LP, panned left on UK – then reversed during the latter part of the song."HANGIN’ ON AN EYELID"– French LP has vibraphone (panned right) during intro. Vibraphone on UK LP comes in much later.– French LP has reverb on vocals, vocals are dry on UK LP.– Backing vocals panned hard right on French LP. UK LP has backing vocals treated with delay giving them a stereo effect.– Lead vocals sing a different type of harmony audible during choruses. Mixed out on UK LP.– French LP has a completely different piano solo (panned left). UK LP has a more structured piano solo, which is also double-tracked in stereo.– French LP has no vibraphone during build-up (2:10), and additional piano at 2:24 onwards (panned left).– Backing track – except vibraphone – fades out earlier on French LP, highlighting said instrument."LUCIFER AND THE EGG"– UK LP version sounds like a rough mix compared to French LP.– French LP has a different intro with gong which fades in, with the drum intro fading in and out. UK LP starts with drum intro, sans fades.– French LP has a gong cropping up at different points throughout the entire song. The gong is first heard at 7:38 on the UK LP.– French LP has atonal saxophone and varispeed organ during intro, which is not on UK LP.– French LP has additional organ (panned right)/vibraphone (panned left) interplay throughout the song.– French LP has panned delay on lead vocals.– French LP has vibraphone during organ solo (2:26–3:42), and additional vibraphone 5:06 onwards.– French LP has even MORE vibraphone, plus vocal noises (4:41–4:56), similar types of sounds turn up at 5:06 on UK LP.– French LP lack the delay on lead and backing vocals (6:12 onwards).– French LP has bongos coming in much earlier (6:12), they first appear at 7:17 on UK LP.– UK LP has a more prominent Leslie effect on the vocals throughout the song."SOMETHIN’ YOU GOT"– French LP has additional grunts/Neanderthal vocals/silly voices during song, the Beefheart type ”wah wah wah” vocals are louder during instrumental part.– French LP has stereo reverb on vocals, UK LP has slapback type echo/delay."CYCLOPS"– French LP has an additional 15 second intro of faint organ, UK LP fades in.– Intro organ is panned left on French LP, centered on UK LP."SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI"[No mix differences.]"REVELATIONS CH. 16 VS. 9–21"– French LP version is 24 seconds longer compared to UK LP. UK LP edit out a first ”dramatic” section (which, incidentally, sounds a lot like ”Black Celebration” era Depeche Mode). The edit point on the UK LP is at 1:10."TAKE TO THE SKIES"[No mix differences.]"D.M.B.Y.S.C. – REPRISE"– French LP version is 50 seconds shorter. UK LP has an intro of noises, sound effects and vocals from the title track. No mix differences. That's about it. I think I need to have a lie down now.

  • This version is the repress from 1972 & contains The Funeral Single as the first track. I bought this version in early 1973. So This is clearly from 1972.

  • It is fake info. The 1972 version is also contained as original! A different version! From that exist a millenioum repress conterfereit bootleg version. Would be nice if discogs people would separate this chaos.

  • larrydart. Are you sure the 1972 edition is a repress? Or this version is A REPRESS, from around 1995???

  • larrydart , if you would sell the orig 1972 Funeral version, please write me. [email protected]

  • This comment is still bugging me, it's totally different. I can send the files to anyone who needs to hear it.

  • Out there. On its own. Nothing else sounds like this. An incredible listen (if you give it your time...)

  • "Side one and the last track on side two are a different mix to the UK Mushroom release." -This only means one channel is louder/the other is weaker than the other one, nothing else.

  • Actually, it's totally different, way more vibes, different vocals and different organ.
