Live at the Jazz Café is a live album released in 1998 by ProjeKct One, a sub-group of King Crimson. Live at the Jazz Café was included as part of the 1999 box set The ProjeKcts. The original material for the album was recorded live from 1 to 4 December 1997, during a four-night tour of improvisations at the famous Jazz Café in Camden Town, London, England. The same sessions provided material for the later Jazz Café Suite album.

The great jazz dancers who appeared on its block-long floor ranged from professionals like Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers to everyday Harlemites. During a time of racial segregation and strife, the Savoy was one of the most culturally and racially integrated of institutions, and its fame was international. It was the heartbeat of Harlem’s community and a testament to the indomitable spirit and creative impulse of African-Americans. Stompin’ at the Savoy is usually recorded as an instrumental although Ella Fitzgerald’s scat versions are legendary. Nonetheless, Andy Razaf’s lyrics are interesting: his approach switches the subject as the song progresses through its A-A-B-A form. This album boasts two contrasting versions of the tune, and Ella’s voice, scatting and sense of swing are in peak form. Edgar Sampson was an alto saxophonist in Chick Webb’s band when he wrote the tune. Stompin At The Savoy refers to the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York City which was home to many of the famous swing era bands. Stompin At The Savoy could be considered a theme or an anthem for the swing era. It’s a song that epitomizes.
