The plastic Blue Amberol records were much more durable than wax cylinders. The Edison lab claimed a 3000+ playback quota for the Blue Amberol. In 1908, Edison introduced Amberol Records which had a playing time of just over 4 minutes. The process of making the finished record was the same as the Gold Molded records, however, a harder wax compound was used.

Blue Amberol Records was the trademark for a type of cylinder recording manufactured by the Edison Records company in the . Made from a nitrocellulose compound developed at the Edison laboratory-though occasionally employing Bakelite in its stead and always employing an inner layer of plaster-these cylinder records were introduced for public sale in October 1912. The first release in the main, Popular series was number 1501, and the last, 5719, issued in October 1929 just as the Edison Records concern closed up shop.

Another 30 selections released on Edison's new format, the Blue Amberol cylinder. These cylinders were released in August 1913. All of the transfers are done from the best copies of these cylinders to archival quality standards and expertly restored. The complimentary liner notes that accompany this release include background on the Blue Amberol format, notes on the transfers, and images of some of the marketing material that originally accompanied the cylinder releases in the Edison Phonograph Monthly.

Blue Amberol Records was the trademark name for cylinder records manufactured by Thomas A. in the US from 1912 to 1929. They replaced the 4-minute black wax Amberol cylinders introduced in 1908, which in turn replaced the 2-minute wax cylinders that had been the standard format since the late 1880s. The four-minute Amberol cylinder made its début in 1908. Amberols were made of a fragile, black, wax-like compound which was harder than the original 1902 black wax. This Amberol wax was also used for 2-minute standard records from 1908 until the Blue Amberol appeared in 1912. The introduction of the Amberol started a resurgence of interest in cylinder records, but problems soon became apparent. Amberols crack rather easily and could break during playback.
