The release in 2016 of the fourth Tyde album came as something of a surprise, then. Titled Darren 4, the record featured some familiar faces like his brother Brent and guitarists Ben Knight and Colby Buddelmeyer, and some newcomers like family friend Neal Casal and Suede guitarist Bernard Butler. The first couple songs sound like they were recorded days after Three's Co. instead of a decade; "Nice to Know You" is the kind of meeting between bubbling country-rock and jangling '80s .

The Tyde are an American indie rock group. Tracing their roots to early 1990s LA indie band Further, formed by Darren Rademaker and brother Brent, The Tyde cite Felt, The Beach Boys and The Byrds as major influences. They are not to be confused with band from the Iowa in the late 60's called The TYDE, known for songs such as Psychedelic Pill and Lost.

God, have I missed Darren Rademaker and The Tyde. Though Darren 4 seems to mix metaphors by hearkening to Scott Walker, a decade since the last (and let’s be honest, most disappointing) Tyde album Darren and his ragtag band (including his brother, Brent) have outdone all expectations. By the time of the Tyde's first album, 2001's Once, the lineup included a bunch of guys from Beachwood Sparks (brother Brent on bass and vocals, Christopher Gunst on drums, and Farmer Dave Scher on pedal steel guitar and keys). Released by The Track & Field Organization, the record also featured a guest appearance by the Pink Fairies' Twink on tambourine. After releasing the 2012 "Blood Brothers" single and early-2013 Go Ask Yr Dad EP, the group returned with a record for a new label, Rough Trade, later in 2013. While they played the occasional show, attempts to record their fourth album stalled over and over. By the time 2016's Darren 4 came out on the Spiritual Pajamas label, Rademaker had tried four different times in four different studios to get the record done. Darren 4 featured some familiar faces, like his faithful brother Brent and guitarists Ben Knight and Colby Buddelmeyer.

On his fourth album, Darren 4, Darren Rademaker is sounding like he’s recaptured the spirit that inhabited the sunny strains of Once and Twice, summoning up the ghosts of The Byrds, The softer side of Creation (The Sneetches, Suede, Felt) and the summer sun that beamed from within The Beach Boys. He’s also adding his dose of wearied and weathered vibes, as if the sun only leads to sunstroke and a hangover that puts the good times in bas relief. Lyrics about trysts with twenty-two year-olds aside, the album has a wonderful feel to it and Gossip is a highlight for me. Its practically swooning.
