Tumbleweed Connection is the third studio album by English singer-songwriter Elton John, released in October 1970 in the United Kingdom and January 1971 in the United States. It is a concept album based on country and western/Americana themes. All songs are written by John and Bernie Taupin, with the exception of "Love Song" by Lesley Duncan. Tumbleweed Connection is truly one of Elton John's finest albums. It was never one of his biggest sellers, which is sad because it is outstanding. The theme of the album is about the American west, which Elton and Bernie Taupin were fascinated by. It is interesting to me that this album sounds more "country" than the garbage snap track drivel that infests country radio today. Yet at the same time, it has that unmistakable Elton John feel and groovy. If you can find the version with the original "Madman Across The Water" on it, get that. The secret is to listen to "Tumbleweed" more than once. Like all good pop music, this album benefits from repeat listens. It will grow on you, and in a good non-"Macarena" way.
Tumbleweed Connection is an ode to an idealized image of rural America sometime in the 19th century. A concept album from an artist not known for concept albums. There’s a sound and a feel here that is consistent, and unlike anything else from Elton John’s discography. There are great songs on Tumbleweed, but what really makes the album is how all of the songs fit and make the whole greater than the sum of the parts. I really like how the setting and the songs create a feeling. For example, Come Down In Time does not really fit the theme of the album.
Back home, Sounds was unreserved in its praise: There isn’t one track on this album I could fault, wrote Penny Valentine. In January 1971, little more than three months since the Elton John album became his first US chart record, Tumbleweed Connection entered the Billboard charts at an impactful N. 8. Even more impressively, it gave Elton two of America’s biggest albums at the same time, with his previous, eponymous release at N. 1 that week. Within seven days, those positions were N. 1 and N., respectively; another week on, he had two of the top six albums in the country.
