Curtis is the debut album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in September 1970. Produced by Mayfield, it was released on his own label Curtom Records. The musical styles of Curtis moved further away from the pop-soul sounds of Mayfield's previous group The Impressions and featured more of a funk and ed sound. The album's subject matter incorporates political and social concerns of the time.

Written-By – Curtis Mayfield (tracks: 1 to 4, 6 to 16). Notes. All tracks published by Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp.

Classic Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. The Impressions were an American music group from Chicago, Illinois, active from 1958 until 1983, whose repertoire included doo-wop, gospel, soul, and R&B. The group was founded as The Roosters.

The album ends with the title track, Superfly - a perfect character study of Priest and an encapsulation of the entire movie into three-and-a-half minutes. As far as infectious songs go, it is perhaps my father’s best. Johnny’s horns are somewhere between big-band swing and James Brown funk, the drums pound with the insistence of a hustler trying to score, the bass rumbles like a superfly hog, and the percussion adds a Latin flare with guiro and congas. There’s a Curtis Mayfield song that really has no singing or lyrics, which is called ‘Think’ from the Super Fly album that I especially appreciate when I listen to it. My art and my creativities were totally something that was of my own heart and mind.

He would go onto even greater success with his soundtrack for Blaxploitation classic Superfly, but Curtis was his album, the one where he flaunted his talent most liberally. And what of his influence?

After The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield started a prolific solo career, releasing a series of albums starting with his debut, CURTIS. After Curtis Mayfield left The Impressions in 1970, he launched his solo career with his debut album CURTIS. Including the hit songs (Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below, We’re All Going To Go, and Move On Up, the album reached the Billboard Pop Albums Chart Top 20 and was certified gold.
