Culture of Volume is the second album by the British electronic musician East India Youth, released 6 April 2015 on XL Recordings. Culture of Volume is the first East India Youth album released by the Richard Russell-owned label XL Recordings. Most of the production and the recording was completed in William Doyle's home in London. According to Doyle, the album's name comes from a fragment of a verse in Rick Holland's poem 'Monument'

That said, fans of classic ’80s synthpop will be agog. Beaming White’ channels Pet Shop Boys, the stately build of ‘Manner of Words’ is like first-album Human League, and there are even hints of Bowie in Berlin. Some of the best moments are instrumental, like the voiceless opening track or the sudden gear change when ‘Turn Away’ breaks out into a sparkling motorik surge. Most importantly, Doyle’s kept the abundant, earworming melodies that made his first album a hit. Whether or not he’s back on the Mercury shortlist this year, let’s hope he sticks with the keyboards this time – and stays out.

Ultimately, Culture Of Volume is a masterful return from the East India Youth man, one that manages to provoke a rollercoaster of emotions over its run time. As a whole, Culture of Volume is an intense and fascinating album, one that leaves sequel-like anticipation for what else East India Youth may have in store.

William Doyle, the English musician behind East India Youth, has cast himself as a reluctant pop star. Refining his convergence of soul-piercing lyricism and raw, underground dance-inspired instrumentals with help from The Quietus Phonographic Corporation (2013’s Hostel EP) and Stolen Recordings (2014’s Mercury Prize-nominated Total Strife Forever), Doyle’s new relationship with XL Recordings offers him the platform to measure his pop potential. Just weeks removed from the 25th anniversary of Depeche Mode’s Violator, Culture of Volume is reminiscent of a time when well-funded labels were still up for challenging the masses and artists didn’t kowtow to the status quo.

Given the enormous success of East India Youth's Mercury-nominated debut 'Total Strife Forever', the Bournemouth native might have been forgiven for finding the task more daunting than most. A little over 12 months since that album started to bury its way into the mainstream consciousness, William Doyle returns to the fold once again with follow-up 'Culture Of Volume'. Swiftly dispelling any worries, Doyle's second album is one that retains that initial charm while also showing a distinct path of evolution.
