Our list of Ramones Albums Ranked Worst to Best counts down the records they made during their two decades as a band. Over the years, several of their songs became belated pop-culture mainstays; during their lifetime, however, they were barely a radio presence, meaning they needed to be on the road almost constantly to make money

The Ramones were pretty dispirited when they began work on Pleasant Dreams in early 1981. Johnny wanted the group to continue to churn out raw punk songs, while Joey hoped to see them embrace pop. The fact that Johnny began dating one of Joey's ex-girlfriends didn't help matters, nor did Marky's growing alcohol problem. Undeterred by the fact that their debut album failed to rise higher than Number 111 on the Billboard 200, the Ramones returned to the studio to cut another disc in the exact same style. This time they had a slightly bigger budget and a bit more time, though, so Leave Home ended up sounding significantly better than the first disc.

This Ramones discography is ranked from best to worst, so the top Ramones albums can be found at the top of the list. To keep things simple, we haven't included Ramones singles, EPs, or compilations, so everything you see here should only be studio albums.

Ramones, released 40 years ago this month, is one of the most original and satisfying works of art of our time. In just over 29 minutes, it introduced a truly new idea, magnificently realized. We can date the era of album rock roughly to the release of Rubber Soul in December 1965. At this point, rock/pop artists began to release records intended be greater than the sum of their parts, LPs that were more than a collection of tracks designed to fill the spaces between singles and well-treaded covers. Of course, jazz, classical, avant-garde and even folk artists had been conjuring album-length experiences for decades, but it was a relatively late development in rock.

In 1985, the Ramones released their best album in years. Too Tough to Die wasn't perfect – its attempt to engage with current affairs on Planet Earth 1988 was embarrassing: "The solution to peace isn't clear/ The terrorist threat is a modern fear. But the band sounded reinvigorated. The last great Ramones song was this standalone 1985 single, written in response to Ronald Reagan's visit to a German cemetery where members of the SS were buried. It cropped up on the following year's Animal Boy album, retitled My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down, because the fiercely Republican Johnny was so upset by its criticism of the president (Johnny and Joey's tortured relationship is a matter too tangled for this piece: watch the film End of the Century to discover the extent of their mutual loathing).
