Beach Slang is nothing if not sincere. From the release of their initial EP in 2014, Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken?, it has been impossible to deny that fact. The band's ceaseless earnestness and desire to bring comfort to the disaffected is not some shtick, it is a mission. A few stats on Beach Slang’s glorious and galvanizing debut album: in less than a half hour, it provides 10 righteous bursts of punk rock boosterism. All of them speak of being fucked up, being a fuck-up, or some combination of both. In seven of those songs, James Alex sings the word "alive," in three others, he sings "young," and there's one song called "Young and Alive".
I love this and all of the Quiet Slang material. I was skeptical at first. How could those raucous punk songs still be enjoyable when you strip away the screaming guitars and chest pounding rhythms that made me love Beach Slang in the first place? Well it works and it's phenomenal. The music is beautiful and somehow perfectly pairs with the band's hard luck poet punk theme. Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken? - EP. 2014.

If you're familiar with any Beach Slang song, you've pretty much already heard A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings. That's kind of the point of Beach Slang. James Alex speaks almost exclusively of being young, loud, and wild to reacquaint listeners with the dormant emotions they once felt were inextricable from formative moments: discovering the Replacements, playing in a high school band, making out on the filthy couch at your first punk rock show. It was one of modern indie rock’s most impressive declarations of intent and the resulting 2014 EP Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken? was so fully-formed, it threatened to make any subsequent Beach Slang music redundant. They quickly turned out a darker, more diverse rendering of their pub-rock sound later that year with Cheap Thrills on a Dead End Street, and the exact same pattern is playing out with Beach Slang’s LPs.
