Valentina ‎(LP, Album). Mystery Date' is the kind of track that builds and in doing so you find yourself reaching for the volume control. Valentina' is a welcome return to form for The Wedding Present and enough to put the doubters' (myself included) minds to rest. Key song: Deer Caught in the Headlights. Reply Notify me Helpful.

Album · 2012 · 12 Songs. Founded in Leeds in 1985, The Wedding Present in 2012 still plays with a firm commitment to tough-sounding pop music (with only leader David Gedge standing as an original member). The guitars and drums are pure brawn, while Gedge finds indelible melodies to skirt as he rants like an angry patron at the last bar on Earth.

Seamonsters was a hard slap of an album, indie pop curdled into abrasion and dissonance, with lyrics whose barbed wit seemed like singer/guitarist David Gedge's dam to hold back much more hurtful words. That version of the Wedding Present, though- Gedge, guitarist Peter Solowka, bassist Keith Gregory, and drummer Simon Smith- is a distant memory. Valentina is essentially Gedge and his current sidemen doing a very solid impression of the Wedding Present as they were circa 1990. His lyrics are still focused on infidelity and emotional unfairness, although his characters are a lot more willing to accept culpability than they were back when he was writing songs with titles like "Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now?"

Valentina is the ninth studio album by English rock band The Wedding Present. It was the first album since Saturnalia not to feature Terry de Castro on bass, although she did provide a few backing vocals. The album was produced by Andrew Scheps, who had previously worked with bands including U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Adele. Included in the eleven tracks is the only single to be taken from the album, You Jane, which was released as a single on 30 January 2012. In May 2015 Valentina was re-recorded by David Gedge's other band Cinerama.

6. The Girl from the DDR Lyrics.

2012 release, the eighth studio album from the veteran Alt-Rock band led by David Gedge. Valentina comes four years after 2008's critically acclaimed El Rey. Recorded in the wilds of France, the suburbs of Los Angeles and the lanes of Brighton, it shimmers with near perfection.

The Wedding Present, who formed in Leeds, England, in 1985, is one of British alternative rock’s longest-running bands. They’re also among its most consistently high-quality. Singer/guitarist David Gedge still writes about the intricacies of romantic love with great humor, insight, and style, and the band still backs his lovelorn tales with a ferocious but controlled take on super-dynamic pop arrangements. It’s Layton you hear first on the band’s most recent studio album, Valentina, pumping out the powerful floor tom/snare intro to You’re Dead. Beyond being a vote of confidence in Layton, it’s a neat clue to the drummer’s approach on the rest of the album-like Gedge’s lyrics, the part isn’t self-consciously clever, but it’s not quite standard fare either.

  • There is an Australian lp release of this, but it appears to be exactly the same as the USA issue, just with a little sticker on the back saying 'Under exclusive licence for Oceania t The Lost And Lonesome Recording co'.

  • Review from The Sound Project - 19/03/2012I have to admit to being rather underwhelmed at the Wedding Present's last long-player, 'El Rey', when it came out back in 2008. The album seemed more of a stagnation by the band rather than a further development of their sound. With that in mind I was a little unsure as to where David Gedge and crew would go, on this the band's eighth studio album. I'm pleased to say, though, that my uncertainty was swept to one side within the first 30 seconds of opening track, 'You're Dead'.The tracks rumbling drums and jangling guitars are the perfect compliment to Gedge's distinct vocals, the one staple of all Weddoes records over the past 27 years. The quality in the production is also much more evident here than on it's predecessor. Whereas 'El Rey' opted for Steve Albini's, somewhat retro, raw sounding approach, 'Valentina' benefits from the smoother approach taken by Andrew Scheps. That's not to say that this record isn't loud, it's just less predictable and the sound has more substance.'You Jane' sounds like classic Wedding Present, in lyrics and music - you could imagine a rawer version appearing on 'Bizarro'. 'Meet Cute' and 'Stop Thief!', despite both having decidedly weak titles, are two of the albums best moments - guitars played with all the fury of past Weddoes classics 'Heather' and 'Niagara'.In an album of many highs, 'Deer Caught in the Headlights' and 'Mystery Date' are both notable standouts. The former is a pacey number that has been one of the highlights of recent live performances. The latter is the album's grande finale and ends the record on a bit of a high note - something not usually expected on a Weddoes long player.'Mystery Date' is the kind of track that builds and in doing so you find yourself reaching for the volume control.'Valentina' is a welcome return to form for The Wedding Present and enough to put the doubters' (myself included) minds to rest.Key song: Deer Caught in the Headlights
