Akira Sakata (坂田明; born 21 February 1945) is a Japanese free jazz saxophonist. Sakata was born in Hiroshima on 21 February 1945. He first heard jazz on short-wave radio and Voice of America, then became more interested in it from listening to film soundtracks. He began studying music seriously at high school, where he played clarinet. He played alto sax in a jazz band when at Hiroshima University. He trained as a marine biologist and moved to Tokyo in 1969.

Akira Sakata - alto saxophone, clarinet & voice Nicolas Field - drums. Here he’s paired with English drummer Nicholas Field, a jazz and improvised music percussionist able to keep up with the reedist’s wild flights. Although half Sakata’s age, it’s a great duo, very responsive to one another, with layers of sound and rhythm, and above all intense.

First Thirst : Live At Cave 12 Avant-Garde Jazz 2018. Akira Sakata, Simon Nabatov, Takashi Seo, Darren Moore : Not Seeing Is A Flower Avant-Garde Jazz 2018. AKIRA SAKATA Akira Sakata & Chikamorachi with Masahiko Satoh : Proton Pump. Live album · 2018 · Avant-Garde Jazz. Recorded in Tokyo, this album contains mostly free-improvised music, but of quite unusual kind. Sakata, who in his younger years has been known by quite explosive screaming sax attacks,is much subtle here. Akira sings on few songs (instead of playing sax) as well, surprisingly his Japanese vocalize fits well and adds lot of additional charm to whole music.

Akira Sakata has been played on NTS in shows including Donna Leake, featured first on 2 May 2017. Songs played include Yarin'Age, Slit Of Cloud and Slit Of Cloud. In 1969 he formed a group Saibo-bunretsu (Cell fission) in Tokyo, and was also performing with various free-jazz musicians. He joined Yamashita Yosuke Trio from 1972 till 1979. In 1980 he formed his trio and its three month tour in Japan elicited a great public response
