Twenty tracks from 1969-1973, the period of Tony Joe White's greatest success, including "Polk Salad Annie" and White's own version of his composition "Rainy Night in Georgia. If there's any criticism to be levied against this music, it's in its occasional lack of variety, White mining staple swamp rock boogie riffs for all they're worth.

Tony Joe White: American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie" and for "Rainy Night in Georgia", which he wrote but was first made popular by Brook Benton in 1970. He also wrote "Steamy Windows" and "Undercover Agent for the Blues", both hits for Tina Turner in 1989; those two songs came by way of Turner's producer at the time, Mark Knopfler, who was a friend of White. Tony Joe White came in on that wave with Polk Salad Annie, a curious song about a tough girl down in Louisiana. Call it early white rap. It's a style White would carry on, which probably led to some lean times as far as popularity, but he still has panache even today, releasing a new album a few years back with some fine duets with some modern women. At 20 tracks, this can get somewhat overkill, but it does demonstrate the man's prowess and song writing ability. 2 people found this helpful.
