Lee "Scratch" Perry (born Rainford Hugh Perry, on 20th March 1936, in Kendal, Jamaica) is one of the most influential people in the development of reggae and dub music in Jamaica. Perry began his career in the late 1950s working with Clement Coxsone Dodd's sound system. He eventually performed a variety of important tasks at Studio One as well as recording about thirty songs, but the pair eventually stopped working together due to personality and financial conflicts.

After reuniting with Perry in London to record 1977’s Punky Reggae Party, Bob Marley visited his former mentor’s studio in 1978, recording demos- Who Colt The Game and I Know A Place -which, too, were only released posthumously. Those who can't get enough of Lee "Scratch" Perry's particular brand of inspired mayhem have had plenty to celebrate at the end of the millennium, with one or two new box sets (many of them mining his celebrated Black Ark period) emerging each year. This one is a good, if not spectacular, collection of material that will appeal primarily to die-hard fans. Perry's production is typical of the Black Ark period: cramped, splashy, and utterly idiosyncratic. His dub versions are also typical of the period, meaning that they're nowhere near as interesting as one might expect.
