New Jersey's Monster Magnet have been cranking out their signature blend of FM doom rock and cosmic stoner metal since the late '80s, and releasing fat slabs of it every three years since 1991, which makes 2013's Last Patrol the venerable band's tenth long-player. Less sonically brutal than 2011's Mastermind, yet still seismic enough to bear the weight of the Monster Magnet moniker, Dave Wyndorf and company have crafted another late-period gem that sounds like an amalgam of the 13th Floor Elevators, Mark Lanegan, Ten Years After, and Mastodon

Then Monster Magnet got signed to A&M in 1993 and they became less bombastic and focused more acutely on melody, but left enough C4 in the mix to level most arenas they played and enough acid in the water to keep the locals tripping for days. For Wyndorf, bringing the band full-circle makes sense as a way to dismiss how vacuous the rock scene has been over the past decade.

If you pick up a Monster Magnet record, you know right off the bat that you’ll get a solid slab of stoner tunes fit for a late-night cruise along the rings of Saturn in a vintage sharkfin Cadillac. There’s a curious lack of hooks and memorable riffs across the album’s running time, but the acoustics, production, and atmosphere are enough to set the mood. So if all you want from your music is mood, you’re in luck. Overall, I think the best way to think of Last Patrol is in the sense of a good smoke session. It’s plenty entertaining at the time, doesn’t demand much from the participant, and you’ll undoubtedly have plenty of fun.
