The Black Album is the sixteenth studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on November 22, 1994, by Warner Bros.
The whole production was subject of a worldwide recall. However: already circulating copies are used for numerous Bootleg releases between 1988 to 1993 and a 2nd wave (mostly clear or other colored vinyl) as aftermath when Prince passed away in 2016

Originally scheduled for release in November of 1987 - following the double-album Sign o' the Times by a matter of months - Prince pulled The Black Album weeks before its release, guaranteeing it near-mythic status. Urban legends spread like wildfire: Prince believed it was too bleak to release; Warner Bros. balked at its explicit lyrics; no CDs were ever pressed, and all the LPs were destroyed. That final rumor was certainly untrue, since bootlegs immediately appeared, and when it finally received official release in the fall of 1994, nearly every die-hard fan already had the record
Prince pulled The Black Album, a nasty slab of funky weirdness, only a week before its scheduled release on Dec. 8, 1987. The Black Album wouldn't finally see the light of day until 1994, and then only for a limited run. Warner Bros. dance-club DJs, reportedly to mixed opinions. That might have been, in part, because Prince spent "Dead On It" incongruently trashing the hottest current musical trend, ra. Engineer Susan Rogers didn't sound surprised by the lukewarm response.
Album: The Black Album. The Black Album" is the 16th full-length studio album by Prince. It's known as "The Black Album" due to its plain black sleeve, which contains no information apart from the catalogue number printed on the spine in peach letters. The sticker on the 1994 release labeled it "The legendary Black Album". It was originally intended to be released on 8 December 1987, but was canceled at Prince's request just prior to release (on 1 December 1987)
For Prince, The Black Album was merely a funky little strut, as when he salivates over a well-known fashion model in Cindy C. ( Where’d you get that beauty mark?/You and I should be undressing ) or leads the band through the cracking-whip rhythms of 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton. The one exception is the cushiony ballad When 2 R in Love, the only song here that was eventually released (on Lovesexy). But playtime is really all the songs are about; in fact, most of them aren’t really songs, just jigsaw-puzzle jams
