Berlioz was smitten and wrote her an impassioned letter – Smithson did not reply. In 1827, the 23-year-old Hector Berlioz attended a performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Odéon Theatre in Paris; Harriet Smithson, a charismatic Irish actress, was playing Ophelia. Berlioz was smitten and wrote her an impassioned letter – Smithson did not reply. Berlioz wrote to a friend: You don’t know what love is, whatever you may say. For you, it’s not that rage, that fury, that delirium which takes possession of all one’s faculties, which renders one capable of anything

The great 19th century French composer Hector Berlioz holds a unique place in musical history. Far ahead of his time, he was one of the most original of great composers, but also an innovator as a practical musician, and a writer and critic whose literary achievement is hardly less significant than his musical output.

Hector Berlioz's Inspirations. Berlioz was a true Romantic and frequently chose topics for his musical works which meant something to him personally and in some cases he identified with the characters or circumstances portrayed by the works. He was passionate about many things, and drew inspiration from works of literature and the theatre. He wrote "The Trojans" (Les Troyens) based on Virgil's Aeneid, "The Damnation of Faust" (an operatic work) based on the story of Faust who forms a pact with the devil, and a number of pieces inspired by Shakespeare's plays.

Berlioz was the archetypal French Romantic composer/conductor, known for passionate emotions, intense literary inspirations, and grandiose musical displays.
