Paul Giger (born 1952 in Herisau, Switzerland), is a Swiss violinist and composer. He plays contemporary classical music, jazz, and free improvised music, and specializes in extended techniques. He has released six CDs on the ECM label and collaborated with the Hilliard Ensemble, Jan Garbarek, Pierre Favre and Marie-Louise Dähler. Chartres (ECM, 1989). Alpstein (ECM, 1991). Swiss violinist and composer Paul Giger is a versatile musician at home in the styles of many periods, genres, and national idioms, from Estonian to Tibetan. All the pieces on this record are sacred in character, whether or not they employ words; all are Giger's own compositions or arrangements, the latter using originals going back 1,000 years.

It’s been seven years since Paul Giger’s last New Series album, Schattenwelt, a solo album. In the interim, the Swiss violinist’s priorities have shifted, an early 90s collaboration with the Hilliard Ensemble opening new perspectives for his music: Up until that point, I was that old-fashioned type of musician who writes for himself and travels, playing his own compositions. Giger’s travels had taken him to Estonia where he played a solo concert in the resonant interior of the Niguliste Church, where Ignis was finally recorded.

Ignis is the fourth album by Swiss violinist Paul Giger recorded in 1998 and released on the ECM label. In 2011, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer used samples of Ignis as the basis for the track "Reshadub" on the remix album Re:ECM.
