Sabicas (1912-1990) and Mario Escudero (1928-2004) were the foremost guitarists of their generation, who also happened to be cousins. But although the total of the albums they both made must run around three figures, they only ever made three records of duets: and two of them, from 1959 and 1960 respectively, are included on the present album (the third was an album of Latin American music called Romantic Guitars - From the Pampas to the Río Grande)

In fact, Sabicas and Mario Escudero were not only "compadres" (Sabicas was the godfather of one of Mario’s children, Agustín Mario Manuel), but were related through family ties through Jiménez, Carbonell and Gabarre. Both had several common ancestors, the best known being Agustina Escudero Heredia (known as the "Queen of the Gypsies" - Reference: Spanish Raggle-Taggle, Walter Starkie, Litt. pages 56–63, 64-5, 72-3), married to Benigno García Gabarre, and one of Ignacio Zuloaga's (well known Spanish painter) main models  . Although The Fantastic Guitars of Sabicas & Escudero is the name of a flamenco album recorded by the duo in 1959, the 20-track 2011 . CD bearing this title is a different release. The first ten cuts do indeed present the material from the original LP called The Fantastic Guitars of Sabicas & Escudero, but that's just the first half of the disc

Escudero, both of whom became de Lucía's mentors and later close friends. They urged him to start writing his own material, advice he took to heart. In 1964, he met Madrileño guitarist Ricardo Modrego with whom he recorded three albums: Dos guitarras flamencas (1964), 12 canciones de García Lorca para guitarra and 12 éxitos para 2 guitarras flamencas (1965). The Fuente y caudal album was one of the best-selling Spanish records for several months and de Lucía and Torregrosa found that the additional instruments and approach away from traditional flamenco proved more popular with the general public. The early influences of the traditional players became increasingly less apparent as de Lucía embraced jazz and other influences, creating his own voice.
