Fair Warning is the fourth studio album by American rock band Van Halen. The album was listed by Esquire as one of the 75 Albums Every Man Should Own.

When Van Halen fans first listened to a copy of the Fair Warning album in the early eighties, few could miss the fact that the band’s sunny subject matter had turned to a more somber and threatened perspective. This tone was set by the album’s opening track Mean Street, and was continued through a song-cycle filled with dark subject matter and disillusionment. The overall theme extended to the record’s haunting cover art, which depicted some poor guying getting pummeled in the face, along with other scenes of aggression, pain and torture. Sadly, due to price constraints at the time of the record’s release, a single sleeve album jacket was used, whereas a gatefold-type cover would have greatly enhanced the details found in the work.

Fair Warning is the first Van Halen album that doesn't feel like a party. This may be a reflection of the band's relentless work schedule, it may be a reflection of the increasing tension between Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth - the cause isn't important, because whatever the reason, Fair Warning winds up as a dark, dirty, nasty piece of work. Gloomy it may be, but dull it is not and Fair Warning contains some of the fiercest, hardest music that Van Halen ever made.

Album · 1981 · 9 Songs. Fair Warning Van Halen. The Very Best of Van Halen (Remastered). Live: Right Here, Right Now.

As Van Halen entered the studio to record their fourth album, they were well on their way to becoming one of the world's biggest rock bands - yet inside the group, creative tension was already running high. Like many young artists, guitarist Eddie Van Halen felt constrained by his own success as the group bore down on what would become their fourth LP, 1981's Fair Warning. All that frustration fed into Fair Warning, which arrived in stores on April 29, 1981. A fairly slender record, clocking in at just over half an hour, it took Van Halen's sound in a darker, more aggressive direction, and even though the album's less pop-friendly approach didn't affect its impact at rock radio - where Fair Warning spun off four Top 40 singles - it slowed their stride a bit among mainstream listeners.
