Urban Hymns is the third studio album by English alternative rock band The Verve, released on 29 September 1997 on Hut Records. It earned nearly unanimous critical praise upon its release, and went on to become the band's best-selling release and one of the biggest selling albums of the year. As of 2015, Urban Hymns is ranked the 19th best-selling album in UK chart history and has sold over ten million copies worldwide.

But in 1997, it felt like a step forward. Urban Hymns was the surprise third act for a band that seemed doomed after its second. Their most successful single up to that point-1995’s string-swept ballad History -doubled as an epitaph, with the notoriously embattled relationship between frontman Richard Ashcroft and guitarist Nick McCabe triggering the band’s demise just before it snuck into the UK Top 30.

The only thing I have a problem with is the lack of harder songs like they had on previous albums. Their b-sides from this era are more experimental and more true to traditional Verve form. Their sold out reunion tour and album Forth pretty much shows that people do remember them 10 years on and Urban Hymns cemented them as legends of Brit pop.
