Joe Gibbs born Joel Arthur Gibson (14 October 1942 – 22 February 2008) was a Jamaican reggae producer. Born in Salt Spring, St. James in 1942, Joe Gibbs studied electronics in Cuba and went on to work as an electronic technician for Stone and Webster in Montego Bay. He moved to Kingston where he set up an electrical repair shop in Beeston Street, with television repairs and sales as its main concern. It was in this shop that he first started to sell records.

Joe Gibbs grew up in the resort town of Montego Bay in the fifties and in the early sixties he moved to Kingston where in 1966 he opened his first shop on Beeston street. Initially he sold and repaired radio and television sets but he soon started to sell records as well because it helped to draw people into the shop. His electronics background gave him the confidence to move into music production and he built his first recording studio in 1968 in the Duhaney Park area: "a simple but effective two track studio modelled on the studio at Federal Records". Along with Lee Perry, Bunny Lee, and Clancy Eccles, Joe Gibbs represented the second generation of star Jamaican producers. Originators in the ska era, like producers Duke Reid and Clement Dodd, trained these pioneers of the later rock-steady sound and even released many important sides in that genre as well. Trojan Records' excellent Producer Series spotlights these behind the scenes heavyweights and Joe Gibbs' The Reggae Train stands out in particular with its wide variety of classic rock-steady and reggae sides from 1968-71.
