Most of Jacques Leguerney’s sixty-eight mélodies were composed and published from 1940 to 1964. Many were commissioned and premiered by French baritone Gérard Souzay, his sister, soprano Geneviève Touraine, and pianist Jacqueline Bonneau. Early songs are comparable in mood and style with Ravel or Roussel (who encouraged Leguerney’s composition); later songs have been compared to those of his contemporary, Poulenc. Interpreting the Songs of Jacques Leguerney]. 3 They may be thought of as the last in the great mainstream of twentieth-century French song. La Caverne d’Écho (1954) from Poèmes de la Pléiade, Volume 7 poem by Antoine Girard de Saint-Amant (1594-1661). Dedication: Josiane and Jean Cier. son page (1944) from Poèmes de la Pléiade, Volume 2 poem by Pierre de Ronsard (1524-1585). Dedicated to Gérard Souzay.

Jacques Leguerney (1906–1997) was a French composer especially noted for his art songs. Jacques Leguerney has been referred to as "the latest – perhaps the last – great exponent of the mélodie". He was largely self-taught, but studied with Nadia Boulanger for a short period. He was also influenced by Albert Roussel and Francis Poulenc, who was a close friend through his life.

Mélodies de jeunesse. Jacques (Alfred Georges Emile) Leguerney Composer. Gurney is as unknown to the French as Leguerney is to us. As MEO explained on the appearance of the first volume of his songs (Harmonia Mundi HMC1171, 4/86), he is an 80-year-old composer whose output has been extremely limited but is ''well worth discovering'' (with which I wholly agree). The present songs-which deserve to be savoured two or three at a time, not swallowed in one gulp-show remarkably imaginative invention and a highly original mind
