This set is part of an ongoing complete recording of the Cantigas by the Spanish group Música Antigua and its director, Eduardo Paniagua. The two CD titles represent, loosely, different textual themes that appear within the larger body of songs. The notated Cantigas give nothing more than a melody and debatably a few hints as to rhythm. The rest is up to the performers, who study treatises, examine works of art that contain musical instruments, and simply choose guesses that seem to make the most sense - as the liner notes here say (in the often fractured English translation), "it is the personality of the musicians themselves, more than any other element, that makes the difference, in.

Eduardo Paniagua (born 1952 in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish architect and musician, specializing in medieval Spanish music. Between 1966 and 1983, he was a member of the group Atrium Musicae de Madrid, led by his older brother Gregorio, playing wind instruments and percussion. More recently he has been a founding member of the groups Cálamus and Hoquetus which specialize in the music of Al-Andalus (Arabic Andalusia). Paniagua also founded and currently manages the record label Pneuma through which he has published a number of his own recordings. Alfonso X, called the Wise (Spanish: el Sabio), was the King of Castile, León and Galicia from 30 May 1252 until his death in 1284. During the election of 1257, a dissident faction chose him to be Roman-German king on 1 April. He renounced his claim to Germany in 1275, and in creating an alliance with England in 1254, his claim on Gascony as well.
