Laura Nyro was only 19 when she recorded her remarkable 1966 debut album. She displayed a maturity far beyond her years as a singer and (especially) a songwriter, paving the way for even bolder advances to come. The First Songs documents the earliest blossoming of her signature style, fusing R&B, Broadway and gospel elements with a quirky lyric sensibility. Wedding Bell Blues, Stoney End and Goodbye Joe are at once soulful and exalted, filled with dreamy poetic nuance
First Songs' is more dynamic, more full of life force. The music on this CD speaks for itself - all of the arrangements on this album contain a beautiful blend of every element of modern music - pop, rock, jazz, blues, and there are classical influences also. Laura Nyro was one of the most original and brilliant artists in popular music. All you have to do is listen to this CD and it will be obvious that it is the work of a musical genius. My first exposure to Laura Nyro was in early 1967 when she appeared on Dick Clark's "Where The Action Is". There was this incredible young barefooted girl singing "Wedding Bell Blues" and "Goodbye Joe". I couldn't believe my ears, she was so good. I owned a copy of this album in vinyl when it was released by Verve/Forecast. I literally wore the album out listening to it over the years.
Laura Nyro (/ˈnɪəroʊ/ NEER-oh; born Laura Nigro, October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist. She achieved critical acclaim with her own recordings, particularly the albums Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) and New York Tendaberry (1969), and had commercial success with artists such as Barbra Streisand and The 5th Dimension recording her songs. Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock, and soul.
Gonna Take a Miracle is the fifth album by New York City-born singer, songwriter and pianist Laura Nyro, with assistance by vocal trio Labelle. It was released on Columbia Records in November 1971, one year after its predecessor, Christmas and the Beads of Sweat. The album is Nyro's only all-covers album, and she interprets mainly 1950s and 1960s soul and R&B standards, using Labelle as a traditional back-up vocal group.
For The First Songs, Nyro is accompanied by a small pop combo. Her duality as composer and performer demonstrate her influence from pop music's golden Tin Pan Alley to the more modern Brill Building style.
