For You is the debut studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released by Warner Bros. Records on April 7, 1978. Prince started recording in September 1977 at Sound 80 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he had previously made a demo. Friend and producer David Rivkin (later known as David Z) provided advice and engineering assistance.

When Prince recorded 1999 – the album lead by this single – he would go all day and all night without rest, turning down food since eating would make him sleepy. Prince's apocalyptic anthem was released in 1982, just as Cold War tensions were reaching absolute zero. Graffiti Bridge, the sequel to 1984's iconic Purple Rain was Prince's final film role. But unlike its heralded predecessor, the accompanying soundtrack would far outshine the film.

Prince supported the album with the Purple Rain Tour, his most extensive to date, and the first billed as Prince and the Revolution. Every song on the album was played regularly on the tour, which comprised of 100 shows throughout the United States, also including two shows in Canada. Boosted by the success of the Purple Rain movie, the album catapulted Prince to international stardom as the album outsold all of his previous (and subsequent) albums, selling 13 million copies in the US and 5 million in the rest of the world.
